A Love Without End, Amen

This week I have spent my days enduring heavy rain, muggy weather, muddy trails, and the organized chaos that comes with Scout summer camp. It has been a week of wet clothes, damp sleeping bags, and long days outdoors. While some people might call that an adventure, there were certainly moments when I would have preferred the comfort of my own bed and the luxury of air conditioning.

This was my third straight year attending Scout summer camp with my youngest son, Hayden. And if I'm being completely honest, I don't go because I enjoy sleeping in a muggy canvas tent. I don't go because I love waking up damp from the humidity or because I enjoy trudging through muddy campsites after another afternoon thunderstorm. I go because Hayden is there.

That is what fathers do. We give of ourselves for the sake of our children. We sacrifice comfort, convenience, and sometimes our own preferences because we love them. We show up. We stay present. We endure the rain, the heat, the sleepless nights, and the inconveniences because the relationship matters more than our comfort.

As I sat at camp this week, I found myself thinking about one of my favorite George Strait songs, A Love Without End, Amen. The song tells the story of a father's unwavering love and then reminds us that such love points to the even greater love of our Heavenly Father.

The truth is, I don't expect my sons to spend their lives praising me for the sacrifices I've made for them. That's not why I do it. What I hope is that they learn from it. I hope they see what love looks like when it chooses service over self-interest. I hope they learn to give of themselves for others. I hope they discover that real love often means showing up when it would be easier not to. That kind of love reflects the heart of God.

In Romans 6, Paul reminds us that Jesus didn't simply die for us; He gave Himself completely for us. Christ entered into death so that we might experience new life. His resurrection matters because it reveals the depth of God's love and the power of God's grace. Jesus willingly endured suffering, rejection, and the cross for our sake. He put our need above His own comfort.

And unlike earthly fathers, God's love never grows tired, never runs short, and never reaches its limit. Because Christ was raised from the dead, we are invited into a new way of living. We are called to leave behind selfishness and embrace sacrificial love. We are called to reflect the kind of love that Christ has shown us—a love willing to serve, sacrifice, forgive, and persevere.

Whether you're a father, a mother, a grandparent, a mentor, or simply someone who cares deeply for another person, you know that genuine love always costs something. Yet that cost is never wasted. Every act of self-giving love points to the God whose love for us truly has no end.

As George Strait sings, it's "a love without end, amen."

In God’s grip,
